The Interpretation Canada Awards of Excellence program is not a competition, entries are judged based upon individual merit. Each product that meets the benchmarks for its category will be recognized.

We have three categories:

Personal interpretation: heritage interpretation that is facilitated by a live interpreter or interpreters

Theatrical interpretation: personal interpretation that uses theatrical techniques such as role playing or characterization

Non-personal interpretation: heritage interpretation that does not rely on the physical presence of an interpreter, and uses communications media such as text panels, video, digital media, et cetera

Awards are given at three levels: bronze, silver, and gold.

Along with recognition, you’ll receive honest constructive feedback from our panel of peer-assessors.

All entries should fit within the broad definition of heritage interpretation:

"Heritage interpretation is any communication process designed to reveal meanings and relationships of cultural and natural heritage to the public, through first-hand involvement with an object, artifact, landscape or site." (Interpretation Canada, 1976)

Entries must be for one distinct product, not a compendium or collection, and not a marketing or outreach product featuring multiple programs, and must have been installed (non-personal)  and/or presented (personal) in 2019.
