About Interpretation Canada

Interpretation Canada is a non-profit, volunteer-based association dedicated to supporting excellence in interpretation. We have been providing professional development opportunities since 1976.

Our members work in many roles and positions, including:

  • as guides, educators, and animators
  • as writers, designers, and interpretive planners, and
  • as education, program, exhibition, and site managers.

What is Interpretation?

No single definition can capture the vibrancy of Canada’s evolving community of practice. This statement is a starting point for understanding interpretation and its role in public education.

"Heritage interpretation is any communication process designed to reveal meanings and relationships of cultural and natural heritage to the public, through first-hand involvement with an object, artifact, landscape or site."
