Salary CAD $57,000-65,000 depending on experience
Hours Full-time, 35 hours per week. One year contract with opportunity for renewal.

The Royal Canadian Institute for Science (RCIScience) is one of Canada’s oldest scientific organizations. A registered charity, we provide a platform for public engagement with leading scientists, to foster critical thinking, expand science dialogue and promote informed decision making.
Since 1849, RCIScience has been providing opportunities for Canadians to connect with science and trusted scientists through its innovative program of in-person and online events including panel discussions, variety shows, cooking demonstrations and documentary screenings. In recent years, we have grown our digital platforms, started a science-themed book club and published RCIScience Magazine, amongst many other innovative initiatives. We are honoured to receive the 2021 NSERC Award for Science Promotion.
The RCIScience Programs Manager is an experienced science communicator responsible for undertaking a variety of tasks relating to planning and delivering RCIScience programs and activities in support of the RCIScience mission and fundraising objectives. This role will include Event Planning, Promotion and Management, Volunteer Management, Social Media Management, Science Communication Training, Content Production and more. The right candidate will have the opportunity to shape this role to support the charity's strategic goals.
Together with the Executive Director and Fundraiser, strategize, implement, and maintain program initiatives that adhere to RCIScience’s objectives;
Develop and maintain program assessment protocols for evaluation and improvement;
Maintain organizational standards of satisfaction, quality and performance;
Oversee multiple projects, ensuring program goals are reached.
Duties & Responsibilities
Event Planning: Coordinating RCIScience programs and related activities by:
a. Advising on style and tone of events based on the desired audience
b. Organizing and attending Program Committee meetings
c. Coordinating logistics for events, such as venue, A/V, live streaming, recording and catering
d. Communicating logistics to participants, speakers and attendees
e. Ensuring event staff & volunteers are scheduled and trained
f. Answering questions from event attendees
Promotion & Online Engagement: Promoting RCIScience programs by eg.:
a. Coordinating the development of all promotional information and assets for RCIScience events and initiatives
b. Engaging followers on the RCIScience social media channels
c. Ensuring online and print information is engaging and up-to-date
d. Assisting with the preparation of Media Releases and interactions with traditional media
Event Management: Ensuring programs and events run smoothly by eg.:
a. Attending and managing programs (day/evening/weekend)
b. Supervising volunteers to check in registrants
c. Ensuring programs are implemented according to RCIScience policies and practices
a. Implement a nationwide volunteer recruitment and training strategy
b. Supervise volunteers, including scheduling and overseeing volunteers during events
c. With the Executive Director, work with volunteers to develop content for the Blog and Magazine
d. Ensure the RCIScience experience is valuable to volunteers
Content Production & Social Media Management
a. Produce engaging and accurate science-themed content for web, social media and YouTube, including video content, posts, etc.
b. Maintain social media platforms with regular postings
c. Manage Instagram takeover program
d. Grow reach and engagement of existing platforms
e. Scope opportunities to join new platforms, develop new social media initiatives and capitalize on trends as they arise
Support the development and growth of new programs and activities as they arise.
The following minimum qualifications are required to successfully perform the job. These are the qualifications that are necessary for someone to be considered for the position..
Undergraduate degree or equivalent in a science-based subject;
Passion for and experience in science communication is essential;
Confidence presenting accurate science information in-person, on camera and written;
Proven experience as a program coordinator, event planner or similar position/experience;
Experience managing volunteers and contract staff;
Experience managing multiple social media platforms;
Experience developing and coordinating communication plans to promote programs;
Proficient in Google Suite, experience with online tools such as Eventbrite, MailChimp, YouTube, Canva, and some basic web-editing;
Excellent time-management and organizational skills;
Outstanding verbal and written communication skills;
Detail-oriented and efficient;
Ability to work independently;
Copy editing experience and an eye for layout of marketing materials desirable;
Video editing experience desirable;
Full, clean driver’s license desirable.
Special working conditions include regular evening and weekend work relating to coordination of RCIScience programming, attending regular meetings in Toronto, and working remotely (eg. from home office). Occasional travel within Canada.
Some light lifting and carrying at events (minimal).
