    Salary: $15.00 Hourly

    Located at the head of Lake Ontario and within the municipalities of Burlington and Hamilton, Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) is the largest botanical garden in Canada and one of the nation’s earliest nature sanctuaries. Comprising over 2700 acres of protected wetlands, botanical collections, parkland and display gardens, and within easy access of millions of nature-starved urban citizens, RBG dedicates its expertise in horticulture, conservation, science and education to connect people, plants and place for the purpose of nurturing and preserving healthy growing life on our planet. RBG directs its efforts, and seeks the support of individuals and organizations, to realize its vision of a world in which everyone is awake to the beauty, diversity and necessity of plants, and from that consciousness more actively works together to protect and preserve plant species and habitats and, by extension, our planet.

    Our Educational Mission is to encourage environmental stewardship by providing meaningful and diverse learning experiences that connect people of all ages with nature and the plant world, and help them to understand the crucial role that plants play in sustaining and enhancing our lives and the environment. Our Education team is searching for two enthusiastic and approachable individuals who are passionate about the world of nature and gardens and want to help connect visitors with our collections. Garden Interpreters work in RBG garden areas interpreting RBG’s plants and collections to visitors in a dynamic and scientifically accurate manner, while providing excellent guest service. These positions play an important role in the overall visitor experience at RBG.

    Hours: May 2 to September 4, 2022, 35 hours per week

    Responsibilities:

    • Set up, staff, and take down mobile activity Discovery Stations
    • Plan and present guided tours, talks, and demonstrations
    • Create and maintain program props and supplies
    • Prepare and deliver special event activities for children and families including Enchanted Garden weekend
    • Keep programming areas and materials tidy and sanitized
    • Maintain relevant documentation and assist in evaluating effectiveness of programs and activities
    • Interact with visitors daily in an enthusiastic and positive manner providing legendary visitor experiences
    • Participate in training on interpretive techniques, customer service, and content development
    • Liaise with volunteers
    • Other duties as assigned
    • Outdoor work required; will be stationed daily in RBG cultivated garden areas and collections
    • Includes working all weekends, statutory holidays (all long-weekends), and some evenings (days off will be between Monday and Thursday)

    Requirements:

    • University or college student in natural science/biology/botany, environmental science, education, science communication, or a related field
    • Good working knowledge of botany, horticulture, gardening, plant ID, and natural history
    • Enthusiastic, approachable, and confident individual
    • Excellent oral communication and presentation skills; experience with interpretation/public speaking/presentation/programming
    • Commitment to service excellence; experience in an environment dedicated to customer service
    • Able to commit to the full duration of the work assignment: May 3 to September 4
    • Possess valid First Aid certification
    • Be a Canadian citizen or be legally entitled to work in Canada
    • Be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment period
    • Be registered in the Young Canada Works online candidate inventory
    • Currently enrolled as a full-time student at a post-secondary institution and intending to return to full-time studies in the semester following this position
    • Computer skills in MS Office products including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel

    Assets:

    • Personal transportation
    • Experience working in interpretation or informal/non-formal education
    • Fluency in another language
